The hard drive is where all long term storage is kept. All movies, music, applications, Operating system and more are kept on the hard drive. It is however an old piece of technology and still relies on physically spinning disks, think racks of CD's on a platter. Due the these physical limitations a hard drive can only be as fast as the platters can spin. This also makes them very fragile and destroyed by magnets. The one thing that that hard drives have going for them however is that they are dirt cheep. A hard drive will normally run you .06 cents for a gigabyte of data while a ssd will run you up to .88 cents per gig.

Sdd's are currently far more expensive than hard drive but provide far greater read and right speeds. This improved stepped will speed up tasks like file transfers, boot times, and opening and closing programs. Ssd's are a luxury item and can be cut from any build with out harmfull side affects.
What most people that opt for when they buy an ssd is a cheep 128/256 gig one. And then only put only windows and key programs on it and use their hard drive for mass storage for thing like music and movies.
